USE PAST PAPERS WITH THE RIGHT COURSE IN MIND
How to use AP World History: Modern past papers
Begin with a question that matches the history you have studied. Search a period such as c. 1450–1750, a theme such as empires and imperialism, or a specific topic such as the Mongols or the Columbian Exchange. The brief result labels help you choose a task; the original PDF supplies the authoritative question wording, sources, maps, images and dates. Open the source before planning an answer. A question that looks familiar from its title can ask for a narrower claim than you expect.
The collection contains released free-response materials, not full multiple-choice exams. The question finder covers every printed option in each of the 25 complete FRQ papers. In 2018–2026 papers, a student normally answered SAQs 1 and 2, chose between 3 and 4, answered one DBQ, and chose one of three LEQ prompts. Earlier papers in this collection used a different three-essay format. The finder shows all options so you can practise more than the historical student selected.
Modern course versus legacy AP World History
AP World History: Modern begins around 1200 CE. The College Board distinguishes the 2019 and earlier AP World History course, whose broader scope began far earlier, from the Modern course in 2020 and later. That change was about course scope, not merely a new title. A 2007 question on Han and Roman views of technology is outside the current Modern content, while a 2007 comparison of Spanish, Ottoman and Russian empire building overlaps much of it. Use the Paper syllabus and Historical era filters together, and judge the printed date range of the question itself.
Some older prompts straddle the c. 1200 boundary. The finder tags those as spanning pre-1200 history rather than claiming the whole question fits the current course. In particular, an older essay might start in 600 CE and end in 1450 CE. Its later part may be useful for source analysis or trade-network practice, but the complete historical range is broader than a Modern unit. Old DBQ rubrics and instructions may also differ from the present exam. Use them to practise historical reasoning, not to memorize outdated task rules.
Which Modern unit does a question help you practise?
The five era filters group the archive at a broad level; they are not substitutes for the College Board’s nine-unit course outline. Unit 1 and Unit 2 cover c. 1200–1450, Units 3 and 4 cover c. 1450–1750, Units 5 and 6 cover c. 1750–1900, and Units 7–9 cover c. 1900 to the present. A prompt can bridge two units, especially a DBQ asking you to evaluate change over a long period. The topic and exact command matter more than a single label.
| Unit | Focus | Approximate era |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · The Global Tapestry | States and societies across regions | c. 1200–1450 |
| 2 · Networks of Exchange | Silk Roads, Indian Ocean and trans-Saharan connections | c. 1200–1450 |
| 3 · Land-Based Empires | Expansion and rule of major empires | c. 1450–1750 |
| 4 · Transoceanic Interconnections | Maritime expansion and Atlantic exchange | c. 1450–1750 |
| 5 · Revolutions | Enlightenment, political revolutions and industrialization | c. 1750–1900 |
| 6 · Consequences of Industrialization | Imperialism, migration and economic change | c. 1750–1900 |
| 7 · Global Conflict | World wars and changing power | c. 1900–present |
| 8 · Cold War and Decolonization | Ideological rivalry and independence | c. 1900–present |
| 9 · Globalization | New connections and global challenges | c. 1900–present |
For example, the 2023 Set 1 DBQ on the collapse of the Qing Empire concerns imperialism, reform and international influence. The 2025 Set 2 LEQ on the Columbian Exchange fits transoceanic interconnections. You could search by a broad era first, then compare two questions that use different historical thinking skills. One might ask for a causal explanation, another for an evaluation of extent. Practising both helps you use content rather than merely recognize it.
What changes for the May 2027 exam?
The AP World History: Modern exam is fully digital in Bluebook. The College Board states that the AP History course content, skills and rubrics remain unchanged for the May 2027 update, while the structure of the short-answer and long-essay tasks changes. Students answer all three short answers, each based on source material: secondary text for Question 1, primary text for Question 2, and a non-text primary or secondary source for Question 3. The long essay becomes one required broad prompt, within which a student selects relevant developments and evidence. The DBQ remains a document-based argument and covers a wider chronological range.
| Section | Questions and time | Exam weight |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | 55 questions · 55 minutes | 40% |
| Short answer | 3 required questions · 40 minutes | 20% |
| Document-based question | 1 question · recommended 60 minutes, including 15 minutes of reading | 25% |
| Long essay | 1 required broad prompt · recommended 40 minutes | 15% |
Most older complete papers in this collection still show SAQ 4 and separate LEQ 2, 3 and 4 options. Those are valuable questions, but their choice pattern is not the 2027 pattern. For a timed 2027 simulation, practise three required source-based SAQs and one broad LEQ. For everyday revision, select individual archive prompts that match your content and skill target.
Read a source-based short answer closely
Read the source’s title, creator, date and context before the lettered parts. An excerpt can contain an interpretation you must identify or test against outside historical knowledge; an image or map can represent a perspective, a process or a relationship between places. The reader opens at the physical source page. The 2021 Question 2 image begins on the page before its printed prompt, so that row starts with the image instead of skipping it. Use the next-page control to see the question and every part.
For each part, give a direct answer and the specific evidence needed to support it. “Identify” does not ask for an essay, but an accurate name or development still matters. “Explain” requires a relationship: how or why the evidence supports the claim. If a question asks about the Indian Ocean trade network, saying that trade increased is weaker than identifying a commercial practice or navigation method and explaining its effect. Check whether the prompt limits your response to a region, century or type of evidence.
Use every document in a DBQ practice set
The DBQ row opens where the prompt begins. Continue through all subsequent pages to read the full document packet. Do not plan from the question page alone. As you read, note what each document can establish, where it comes from, and how its author or audience might shape its message. A map supplied for reference may clarify locations, but if the paper says it is not one of the documents, do not count it as one of your document sources.
Make a defensible thesis that answers the exact command. Organize documents by reasons in your argument rather than writing one paragraph per document. Bring in outside historical evidence when it helps explain the prompt’s time and place. If one document complicates your claim, use it to make the argument more precise. After writing, compare your response with the matching scoring guide, then read sample commentary to understand why particular evidence or reasoning earned credit.
Plan an LEQ or a legacy historical essay
For a long essay, first decide whether the prompt emphasizes causation, comparison, change or the extent of an effect. Then choose specific developments you can explain, not just name. The 2025 Set 2 LEQ on the Columbian Exchange, for example, asks about demographic, cultural or social change across the Atlantic. An answer should evaluate how far the exchanges changed societies, not merely list plants, people and diseases that moved.
Older 2003–2016 papers use a document-based question, a change-over-time essay and a comparison essay. Their latter two rows are labelled as legacy task types. You can still practise tracing change and comparing regions, but do not mistake that historical format for the current LEQ. In a comparison, choose examples from the regions the prompt actually permits. In a change-over-time response, describe both the changing pattern and what persisted, with explanations tied to the stated period.
Review the right scoring materials
- Choose a question. Narrow by era, theme and task; check whether it is a legacy paper.
- Read the original PDF. Include any preceding source page and all DBQ documents.
- Write independently. Answer each requested part or develop a clear thesis with evidence.
- Find its scoring file. Match the same year and set; do not substitute a different paper’s guide.
- Learn from commentary. Samples are student attempts, so read the scorer’s explanation as well as the response.
- Revise once. Identify a specific evidence or reasoning gap, then try another question.
The 2017 library is useful for reviewing rubrics and student samples, but the supplied folder lacks the complete original question paper. The 2026 folder contains only the question paper, without matching scoring files here. Treat those limits honestly when choosing a practice set. If you need help interpreting sources or building an essay argument, see AP tutoring. You can also practise a different historical course with our AP U.S. History question finder or use the AP exam timetable guide to plan your revision.
A LITTLE MORE CLARITY
Questions about AP World History past papers
Choose a relevant era and use the correct paper version when reviewing your work.
Tell us about your needsWhat is included in this AP World History: Modern past-paper collection?
The supplied Drive folder contains 237 PDFs in 23 year folders from 2003 to 2026, with no 2020 folder. Twenty-five complete free-response question papers contain 130 indexed printed question options. The library also includes the available scoring guides, student samples, reports and score data. Multiple-choice sections are not present.
Are all these papers from AP World History: Modern?
No. The 2021–2026 papers in this collection are from AP World History: Modern. Papers from 2019 and earlier belong to the older, broader AP World History course, which included material before c. 1200 CE. The question finder marks those papers as legacy and labels pre-1200 content; some individual questions from old papers still cover relevant Modern-era history.
How can I open a particular question or document set?
Filter by year, set, historical era, theme, question type or course, then select Open question. The popup renders the original Drive PDF at the physical page where the prompt or source begins. Use the page controls to read all parts and every DBQ document. The original-file link appears in the External sources section at the end of the page.
Why are there 130 questions in 25 papers?
The finder counts every printed option, including questions students chose between. Eleven 2018–2026 papers have four SAQ options, one DBQ and three LEQ options each; fourteen 2003–2016 legacy papers have one DBQ, one change-over-time essay and one comparison essay each. This is a count of prompts available for practice, not a count of answers required on each historical exam.
Do these PDFs reflect the May 2027 AP World History: Modern format?
No. The College Board says the May 2027 AP History exams require all three source-based short-answer questions and one broad long-essay question. Older papers commonly give a choice between SAQ 3 and 4 and among LEQ 2, 3 and 4. The older essays use still earlier task types. Use these PDFs for focused practice, then use current-format material for a timed mock exam.
Why is there no 2020 or 2017 paper in the finder?
No 2020 folder was supplied. The 2017 folder contains scoring guidelines, reports and student samples, but no complete standalone free-response paper with its original sources and document set. Those 2017 materials remain available in the PDF library.
Can I use a legacy question to study the Modern course?
Yes, if its actual prompt covers c. 1200 to the present and the skill or topic matches your course. Check the printed dates, not just the year of the exam. A question spanning ancient history or asking about classical empires is outside the current Modern course scope even when it appears beside useful modern-era questions.
How should I check my answer?
Use the scoring guide and commentary for the same paper year and set. For a DBQ, read the entire document packet before writing. Student samples are assessed responses rather than model answers; read the scorer commentary and identify one specific improvement to apply to your next response.
