How to use AP Psychology past papers

Start with a specific weakness rather than opening a random year. If research methods are confusing, select that topic and compare how different questions ask about hypotheses, operational definitions, variables, random assignment and conclusions. If you need to practise current exam writing, select the AAQ or EBQ filter and work through the 2025 sets or 2026 paper. For broader concept review, use the earlier-format questions and apply every named concept to the particular situation in the prompt.

These are released free-response materials, not full copies of every AP Psychology exam. The Drive collection does not include the multiple-choice section. It also does not include every supporting file for every year. Open the original question first, answer it without looking at the scoring guide, and then compare your response with a guide for the same year and paper set. A student sample can show how points were awarded, but a sample is not automatically a model answer.

Understand the current AP Psychology exam

College Board lists AP Psychology as a fully digital Bluebook exam. The 2027 date is Friday, May 14, Session 2; ask your AP coordinator for the local start arrangements. Section I has 75 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes and counts for about two-thirds of the exam score. Section II has two free-response questions in 70 minutes and counts for about one-third. Both responses are entered in Bluebook. Released classroom PDFs help you rehearse the thinking and writing, but they do not reproduce the complete digital testing experience.

The first free-response task is the Article Analysis Question, or AAQ. The second is the Evidence-Based Question, or EBQ. Both first appeared in the supplied 2025 papers. Earlier FRQs also contain useful research, data and concept-application work, but they do not follow the six-part AAQ and source-based EBQ structures. That difference matters if you plan a timed mock exam. College Board itself warns that older released questions do not completely align with the revised course and exam.

Question 1: Article Analysis Question

The AAQ presents one summarized peer-reviewed research source. The six parts ask you to identify the research method, state a research variable, interpret a statistic, identify an ethical guideline, consider generalizability, and use a finding to support or refute an argument with course knowledge. The task is worth up to seven points. Do not assume that saying “experiment” or “correlation” is enough: identify what the researchers actually did and how the supplied details support that classification.

A variable’s operational definition is the specific way it was measured or manipulated in that study. For example, the 2026 AAQ asks about anxiety in a study comparing a Phone Absent group with a Phone Present group. Your answer must use the study’s own measurement details, not merely define anxiety in everyday language. Similarly, a mean difference requires you to say what the groups’ scores show. It does not automatically prove that the result applies to every student or that another factor cannot matter.

For generalizability, inspect who participated, how they were recruited and whether their characteristics resemble the population in your claim. When you write the final argument part, name a specific result and explain how a relevant psychological idea makes that result support or challenge the stated claim. The 2025 sets offer two more studies: one about misinformation and memory accuracy, and one about dogs’ reactions to human emotion. They let you practise the same task with quite different content.

Question 2: Evidence-Based Question

The EBQ provides three summarized peer-reviewed sources about one issue. You must make a defensible claim, select evidence from one source, explain how it supports the claim using AP Psychology knowledge, then do the same with evidence from a different source. The task is worth up to seven points. The 2025 Set 1 question examines whether the presence of others improves performance; Set 2 asks what social conditions make helping in an emergency more likely. The 2026 question asks what strengthens retrieval of recently learned information.

Read all three sources before choosing a claim. Note each study’s participants, method, outcome and limits in a few words. A claim should answer the exact question rather than introduce a broad slogan such as “people are social.” Select evidence that is specific enough to be checked against the source. Then write a separate reasoning sentence showing why that result supports your claim. When the task calls for two sources, using two details from the same study does not meet that requirement.

A practical 70-minute rehearsal is to spend about 25 minutes on the AAQ and 45 minutes on the EBQ, following the optional timing recommendations printed in the current papers. Use the opening reading time to annotate key measurements and source differences. If you finish early, check that every AAQ letter has an answer and that your EBQ cites two different sources with clear reasoning.

Choose older questions by topic, with the format in mind

Earlier papers are especially useful for short concept-application drills. The 2007 schizophrenia question asks about symptoms, biological evidence and treatment. The 2015 sugar-and-hyperactivity question tests why a correlation cannot by itself establish causation. The 2018 student-stress question combines a graph, health concepts and research ethics. The 2024 papers include child development, test anxiety and an experiment about paper color and memory. These questions can reveal weak knowledge quickly, even though their prompt style differs from today’s AAQ and EBQ.

The five current course units are Biological Bases of Behavior, Cognition, Development and Learning, Social Psychology and Personality, and Mental and Physical Health. College Board lists each as 15%–25% of the multiple-choice section. Those ranges do not mean every FRQ must be devoted to one unit. Many earlier questions deliberately combine concepts from several areas; the finder marks them cross-unit instead of forcing an inaccurate single-unit label.

Review answers with the correct scoring materials

1. Select one task. Choose the AAQ, EBQ or an earlier topic-based FRQ.
2. Read the original. Keep all of the study summary, graph, source material and directions in view.
3. Answer independently. Give each requested part its own clear response and apply terms to the actual situation.
4. Match year and set. A Set 1 question must be checked against Set 1 scoring materials.
5. Revise once. Identify one missing evidence link, unsupported inference or incomplete concept application, then rewrite it.

Where available, scoring statistics show how students performed on the task as a whole; they are not a substitute for the scoring criteria. Reader reports and scored sample responses can clarify a difficult point, but use them after making your own attempt. The supplied 2026 folder has only the original question paper, so the library does not present a 2025 guide as its answer key.
