READ THE PAPER BEFORE YOU WRITE
How to use UPSC Mains previous-year papers
Choose a year and the paper you intend to practise. The question finder is useful for a quick, focused session: type a phrase such as “monsoon,” “federalism,” or “agriculture,” or use the broad subject-area filter. The paper library is better when you want to attempt an entire question paper in its original order. Both views lead to the same PDF files supplied in the linked Drive folder.
Open the PDF and read its own directions first. The number of questions, section layout, choice rules, word limits and marks can differ between older and newer papers. A General Studies question may continue onto the next physical PDF page. An Ethics case study may have several lettered parts after a long situation. The reader starts at the indexed page, but you must use its next-page control to see the whole task.
For a short answer-practice session, select one question, decide what the directive asks you to do, outline two or three relevant points, then write within the word limit printed beside that question. “Discuss,” “examine,” “analyse” and “evaluate” require different kinds of reasoning. A strong answer responds to the precise directive and connects evidence to an argument; a large list of remembered facts is not enough by itself.
Essay practice works differently. In the modern papers in this collection, Section A and Section B offer alternative topics, and candidates choose one from each section. Study the exact essay directions in the year you opened before attempting a timed response. The index lists individual topics to make them searchable; they are choices, not eight essays that a candidate must write.
For General Studies I, examine how the prompt uses history, culture, society or geography. For General Studies II, pay attention to the constitutional, governance, welfare or international-relations frame. General Studies III questions often connect economic development, agriculture, technology, environment, disaster management or security to practical policy choices. General Studies IV asks you to reason about ethics, integrity and public administration; its case studies need a clear choice, consequences and justification. The broad tags on this page help discovery, but an individual question can span more than one area.
After you finish, compare your answer with the wording and marks in the original paper. Keep a log of the question number, year, paper, your missed demand and a concrete next step. For instance, if you described a policy but did not evaluate its limits, write a brief counterpoint on the next attempt. Revisit a related question from a different year to see whether the improvement transfers.
What this archive covers
The supplied Drive collection has five papers for each year from 2013 through 2026: Essay, General Studies I, II, III and IV. It also has three older PDFs for 2012: Essay and General Studies I and II. That makes 73 supplied paper files. The question finder indexes main numbered questions and essay topic choices. A lettered subpart is included under its parent question, not counted as a separate result.
This is a focused General Studies and Essay library. UPSC also publishes optional-subject and qualifying-language papers, but those files are absent from the supplied folder, so they are not represented as if they were available here. The official UPSC previous-question-papers page is linked at the end for broader coverage. The 2012 files are third-party scans with an earlier structure; the 2012 General Studies files are Hindi-only. Use them for historical practice and check the current exam instructions separately.
All 73 PDFs are scanned. Search previews were produced from optical character recognition and then checked against the paper structure; OCR can still miss words, punctuation or question numerals. A result marked “nearby page” has an uncertain vertical starting point in the scan and opens the nearest indexed physical page. It does not replace reading the original question. Do not copy a preview into an answer plan without checking the scan.
“PDF page” means the file’s physical page number, starting at one, rather than a printed booklet number. The 2013 Essay file has its topic page before its instructions page in the supplied scan, so its topic buttons lead to page one. Some other files have a cover page, placing the first numbered question on page two. These details explain why opening a question directly is more useful than relying on the printed page label.
Use the archive as a practice and discovery tool. It does not provide official model answers, a scoring service or a prediction of future questions. The file itself remains the authority for its content, and the official UPSC site remains the authority for current exam notices and released papers.

Questions about UPSC Mains past papers
Know the collection’s limits, find the original prompt and practise with the correct paper.
Tell us about your needsWhich UPSC Mains papers are in this collection?
The supplied Drive folder contains 73 PDF question papers dated 2012–2026. From 2013 through 2026, it has Essay and General Studies Papers I–IV for each year. Its 2012 folder has Essay and General Studies Papers I and II only. It does not contain optional-subject or qualifying-language papers.
Does the question button open the original PDF?
Yes. It opens the selected Drive PDF inside the reader at the indexed physical page. Some older scans have unclear printed numerals, so those entries open the nearest checked page; read the surrounding page and use the page controls for continuations.
Are these answer keys or solved papers?
No. This collection contains question papers only. The short search previews are reading aids taken from OCR and may contain errors. Always check the original PDF for the exact wording, word limit and marks.
Why does the 2012 material look different?
The 2012 PDFs supplied in Drive are older third-party scans, and the two General Studies files are Hindi-only. They also follow an earlier paper structure. They remain available for historical practice but are separated from the modern five-paper collection.
How should I practise with UPSC Mains previous-year questions?
Choose a paper and year, read the original directions, and answer one numbered question or case study under a time limit. Check the required word count and marks in that PDF. Afterward, compare your work with the syllabus and an authoritative evaluation method; this page does not supply model answers.
