Edexcel GCSE Maths paper format

The current Pearson Edexcel GCSE Mathematics qualification uses specification code 1MA1. Foundation and Higher each have three written papers. You take all three papers from the same tier in the same exam series. Paper 1 tests work without a calculator; Papers 2 and 3 allow one. Each current paper is worth 80 marks and lasts 90 minutes, giving a complete set a total of 240 marks.

The letter at the end of the reference identifies the tier: F means Foundation and H means Higher. The digit identifies the paper. For example, 1MA1/2H is current-specification Higher Paper 2, a calculator paper. Check the reference on the cover before starting a timed attempt; a paper number alone is not enough to identify the right document.

Foundation or Higher: choose the tier you study

For the current qualification, Foundation offers grades 1–5 and Higher offers grades 4–9, with a grade 3 available under the qualification’s rules. A Foundation paper is not simply a shortened Higher paper: the content balance and level of demand differ. Start with the tier you have been entered for. If you are considering a change, discuss it with your teacher using evidence from complete practice papers.

A high mark on one paper does not settle a tier decision. Compare several attempts, look at the types of errors you make and consider how comfortably you can explain your methods. If you practise a paper from the other tier to explore a topic, keep that result separate from your usual exam rehearsal record.

Earlier Mathematics A papers: 1MA0

The 2012–2016 files belong to the earlier Edexcel Mathematics A specification, 1MA0. Those papers use a two-paper format: Paper 1 without a calculator and Paper 2 with a calculator. The supplied papers have 100 marks and a time allowance of 105 minutes each. They can give you useful work on arithmetic, algebra, graphs, geometry and reasoning, but their assessment format is different from a current GCSE (9–1) set.

Use the specification filter to keep older practice separate. For a current mock exam, choose three matching 1MA1 papers. For additional skills practice, an older 1MA0 paper can be useful when you select material that your present course covers. Do not combine a legacy paper score with two current papers and treat the result as a total out of 240.

How to revise with GCSE Maths past papers

Start with one complete paper

Select your specification and tier, then choose a year. Read the cover so you know the time limit, calculator rule and equipment required. Download the PDF if you want to print it or practise without an internet connection. Use separate working paper when you cannot write into the printed answer spaces, and label your work with the question numbers from the original document.

On your first attempt, decide whether you are diagnosing gaps or rehearsing exam conditions. For diagnosis, you can pause to note an unfamiliar topic, then revisit it afterwards. For a timed rehearsal, follow the printed time allowance and put notes away. Record which kind of attempt you made so that your later scores are comparable.

Practise the calculator rule honestly

On Paper 1, work without a calculator. Show arithmetic steps and check fractions, negative numbers, powers and rounding carefully. On calculator papers, practise entering expressions accurately, using brackets and checking whether the result is reasonable. A calculator can carry out a calculation; you still need to choose the right method and communicate the reasoning.

Keep exact values when the question requires them and round only at the appropriate stage. Include units where needed. Before accepting a numerical answer, ask whether its size fits the situation. An area, probability or percentage outside the expected range can reveal an input or method error even when the calculation itself looks tidy.

Review methods as well as final answers

After the attempt, use the matching mark scheme when it is available. Separate a conceptual gap from a slip in arithmetic, a misread instruction or missing working. Note the topic, the step that went wrong and one action to address it. A short, specific correction such as “expand both brackets before collecting terms” is more useful than writing “revise algebra”.

Rework the missed problem after studying the method, then try a different problem on the same skill. Return to the original later without looking at your correction. Build up to a matching three-paper set

For current 1MA1 preparation, complete Papers 1, 2 and 3 from the same year, series and tier. Record the three scores separately before adding them out of 240. That helps you see whether non-calculator work, calculator technique or broader mathematical reasoning needs more attention.

Do not apply one fixed percentage-to-grade table to every paper. Grade boundaries relate to a particular qualification and exam series, and a single practice paper is only one part of the assessment. Use practice scores to identify what to work on next, and refer to the official series boundaries when reviewing a complete matching set.

Space papers between focused topic sessions. For example, attempt one paper, review the two or three most significant gaps, practise those skills, then attempt another paper. A weekly study plan can help you balance paper practice with the work needed to improve.
